I do not consider kombucha a "luxury” [”Bottled in Bond,” Dec. 22 Xpress]. It is a health drink in many cultures and essential to my healthy lifestyle. If I were employed at a business where I was given two bottles as part of my wages, I would consider it a benefit.
Perhaps other local businesses could follow Buchi's lead and add Buchi as a healthy choice for their employees. I applaud Sarah and Jeannine for starting a health-oriented grassroots business.

As stated elsewhere,in other comments on-line and on air during Kila's radio interview, while the employees of Buchi were and are grateful to be working for $10 an hour plus 2 bottles of Buchi, 4 out of 5 employees working at Buchi at the time Kila made the phone call were uncomfortable with the Living Wage Certification being on the label. 3 out of 4 employees remaining on the bottling line after Kila was fired felt less secure in their jobs and hurt by the way that Kila was fired. These employees did in fact recently write the owners of Buchi a letter expressing their disappointment in the way Kila was fired and requesting a positive resolution with her. The owners of Buchi have introduced the State of Grace document into the workplace, and the current employees are very grateful. Ironically, had a State of Grace document been in effect, noen of this would have happened in the way that it did.

This is deeply insulting to working people everywhere. To suggest that one should be forced to take a $4.00/bottle product that contains $.25 worth of ingredients that we all have in our homes in insane. We all can make kombucha, there is no reason to use it in loo of wages.

Indeed the benefits of kombucha have been enjoyed for many thousands of years. I would agree its not a "luxury item", certainly it has much more appeal then the concept of luxury. Besides all that though it tastes so damn good!

I agree with Nancy 100%. Kombucha drinks are essential to the trustafarian lifestyle of Asheville. ya know? Gotta keep that street-cred image up! Queue up that hay bale photo of us sitting around in Carhart lookin' like we don't know how to use a razor.

You should review the 'Living Wage' standards on their website. It clearly states that such products can indeed be used in addition to wages.
