This evening, Parkway Playhouse premieres Along About Sundown, a musical memoir of Bascom Lamar Lunsford.

It's Lunsford's name that graces the new outdoors stage in Asheville's Pack Square Pack. The Mars Hill native was a lawyer, folklorist and musician. He was also the original organizer of Asheville's Mountain Dance and Folk Festival, performing at it from 1928-1965.

According to press for the play, "The production also shares a unique tie to Lunsford: it was written by two of his nieces, Brenda Lunsford Lilly and Sandra Mason. Both are accomplished playwrights and Brenda Lunsford Lilly was one of the collaborators on the Parkway Playhouse’s 2010 production of The Ballad of Tom Dooley. The cast also features Tommi Lyn Lunsford, another relative of Bascom."

Other actors in the production are: Ron Powell, Minnie Powell, Anthony Hensley, Kenny Jobe, Alex Sheets, Bethany Rowe and Amanda Pisano. Steven Moore plays Bascom Lamar Lunsford. The production is being directed by Michael Lilly.

Performances are Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m. Tickets are $12-$22. All tickets for Friday, Aug. 26 show are $12 as part of the “First Friday” program. A talkback with members of the cast and creative team takes place after the show on Saturday, Aug. 27.
