Teacher Workshop on using Slave Deeds in the Classroom
Asheville-A workshop designed to instruct teachers on using Buncombe County slave deeds for primary document study in the classroom will take place in the Lord Auditorium of the Pack Memorial Library on August 12, 2013 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.
This staff development opportunity is part of the exhibition of Forever Free, an exhibit of documents related to slavery in Buncombe County prior to 1865. The workshop, sponsored by the Center for Diversity Education, will provide opportunities for educators to view these documents up close in order to gain a better understanding of how to use the slave deeds for primary document study in the classroom. The agenda will include a lecture by Dr. Darin Waters whose scholarship focuses on the African American Community during slavery in Buncombe County, lesson plans for classroom use, and a downtown walking tour of sites that are significant to the African American Community.
For students in the 4th-11th grades, primary document study is part of the common core standard requirements for K-12 education in North Carolina. Eric Grant, Buncombe County Schools Secondary Social Studies Coordinator shares “A hallmark of effective education is that it remain relevant. Analyzing primary documents focused on the African American experience in Buncombe County provides a relevant context for each of the curriculum standards for NC public schools. Additionally, considering the continuing national conversation about race relations in America, such scholarship as that being presented by Dr. Darin Waters will enable teachers and students to think critically and become increasingly informed participants in that conversation.”
Forever Free remains on display in the Pack Memorial Library until the end of August after which it will travel to venues throughout Buncombe County. To view the deeds on line visit www.buncombecounty.org/slavedeeds. To register email firstname.lastname@example.org. There is no charge for this workshop and CEU’s will be awarded.
