In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, NCDOT's Photogrammetry Unit is snapping into action. As soon as conditions are safe, staff from the Photogrammetry Unit and the Aviation Division will take to the skies from Raleigh-Durham International Airport in a Beechcraft C-90 aircraft, which is mounted with a high-resolution digital camera.
The team plans to fly at about 7,500 feet from Ocracoke to Corolla, covering N.C. 12 and the coast line. Additionally, the group will go on lower level flights at about 2,200 feet covering the spots along N.C. 12 that frequently experience overwash on Ocracoke and Hatteras islands.
The camera can produce black and white, color and infra red images that will be used to make photographs, maps and 3-D measurements of the landscape. NCDOT officials will also compare those shots to pictures taken by the Photogrammetry Unit before the storm hit to get the clearest possible view of Irene’s effects.
