Full announcement from the Asheville Police Department:
ASHEVILLE – On 08-28-11 at approx. 1947 hours, Officer Justin Wilson with the Asheville Police Department was patrolling in the area of the Shiloh community when he observed Tommy Lee Harrison, Jr. in the area of the Shiloh Center. Officer Wilson was aware that Harrison had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for assault with a deadly weapon while in the presence of a minor, so he attempted to take Harrison into custody. As Officer Wilson called out Mr. Harrison’s name and asked him to stop, Harrison made the conscious decision to flee on foot toward Brooklyn Road. Officer Wilson then gave chase and caught Mr. Harrison after a short distance without incident. A search of his person and backpack revealed a mason jar containing marijuana and currency, as well as a loaded sawed-off shotgun with live shells.
While conducting the search, a crowd of approximately 20 subjects gathered near the site of the arrest and were verbally hostile toward Officer Wilson. Assisting units quickly arrived, and the officers left the area without making any further arrests.
Mr. Harrison, who listed his occupation as a Student at Asheville High School, was served with the open warrant, and was also charged with Resist Delay and Obstruct, possession of pyrotechnics, possession of drug paraphernalia, PWIMSD Sch. VI, possession of a controlled substance within 300 feet of a school, and possession of a weapon of mass destruction.
Mr. Harrison is currently being held under a $20,000 secured bond.

A sawed off shotgun has always been classified as a wmd, same as a hand grenade, or even a bunch of shotgun shells taped together. It is just in the last 20 years that the media has sensationalized the term.
