Wagner Tannhäuser Overture
Bruch Scottish Fantasy — Noah Bendix-Balgley, violin
Wagner Tannhäuser Venusberg Music
Stravinsky Firebird Suite
On Opening Night, we join a worldwide 200th birthday celebration of the famous and controversial German composer Richard Wagner. Wagner’s music dramas changed the course of history, and his mastery of the orchestra has inspired generations of composers who followed. The Overture and Venusberg Music from Tannhäuser tests the mettle and the power of any ensemble, and with its extended build-up to musical triumph, it makes a fitting opening to our season of sonic delights.
We welcome back hometown hero Noah Bendix-Balgley, who since his solo debut with the ASO has been named the new Concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He performs Bruch’s joyous Scottish Fantasy, replete with dance and song of old Scotland. To complete our evening, we’ll perform the dramatic music from Stravinsky’s first ballet, The Firebird. From the mysterious rumblings of the first few bars to the triumphant brass-dominated finale, few composers have made such a sensational sonic debut.

Renovations and Parking!
The US Cellular Center is nearly done with their overhaul of the outer lobby. Ticket windows and will-call will be in new, more convenient locations that should make entering Thomas Wolfe Auditorium easy. If you have any questions, just ask an ASO Board Member (look for the gold badge!), many of which will be greeting patrons Opening Night.
There are no conflicting events planned at the US Cellular Center the evening of our concert. The weather is expected to be plesent, which will bring out both locals and tourists, so we still suggest arriving early, having some dinner downtown, and catching our Pre-Concert lecture at 7:00PM! The US Cellular Center parking garage will be open and operating on an event fee.
