ASHEVILLE – On 09-03-11, at approximately 7:30 p.m, officers from the Asheville Police Department were dispatched to 345 Cumberland Ave. near Montford Park regarding an assault. Upon their arrival, officers soon discovered that a 12 year old female had been sexually assaulted and robbed. The suspect was chased down and held by witnesses until police could place him in custody.
Investigators spoke with several witnesses at the scene who were able to identify the suspect involved in the assault. Nathaniel Trevon Downs, B/M, Date of birth 08-31-1993 was taken to police headquarters for interviewing, and subsequently charged with 1st Degree Sexual Offense with a Minor and Common Law Robbery. Downs is currently being held in the Buncombe County Detention Center on a $500,000 secure bond.
Police officials would like to commend the actions of the many members of the Montford community who witnessed elements of this event unfolding and made a prompt notification to the police department. Had it not been for their quick response and efforts, the situation could have possibly ended much worse.

Does APD have any info indicating that this young man may be the same person responsible for the other Cumberland Ave/Montford neighborhood assaults this summer? Way to go, Montford residents! Criminals beware!!! You will not get away with it!

I'm sure it is no way connected to the gross disparity in wealth between montford and the neighboring 'projects'.
