Carrie Newcomer: A Master Singer/Songwriter Comes to the White Horse Black Mountain

Carrie Newcomer has been described as “a soaring songstress” by Billboard, and a “prairie mystic” by the Boston Globe. Rolling Stone wrote that “she asks all the right questions.” One of the definitive voices of the heartland and progressive spirituality, Newcomer has the ability for sharp observation of the world. Newcomer has attracted a devoted following with her warm voice, exquisite melodies, and an irreverent yet spiritual view of the world. Touring in advance of the April 1 release of her new album A Permeable Life, Carrie Newcomer will perform songs from her vast and varied catalog at the White Horse Black Mountain on Friday, Feb. 21 at 8 p.m.

A songwriter whose work often displays a literary sensibility, she has frequently collaborated with noted authors, and academics. She’s travelled as a cultural ambassador to India and Kenya, and often gives workshops in alternative spirituality. True to her Quaker roots, her range of causes, activities, collaborations and philosophies have profoundly influenced her music. “We have to decide”, says Newcomer, “if our response to a limited amount of time is to speed up and never really be present, or to slow down to the speed of the soul and savor what is momentary and now.”

Carrie Newcomer delivers her musical message in a clear, rich alto wrapped around gorgeous melodies, a songwriter whose depth and facility with words also allows for a distilling simplicity.
