What: OpenDoors of Asheville’s Benefit Art Auction
Where: Haywood Park Hotel Ballroom, located at 1 Battery Park Ave. in downtown Asheville
When: Saturday, Feb. 12, 7 to 11 p.m. Purchase tickets by Feb. 7 ($75 single ticket/$100 per couple. Info: http://opendoorsasheville.org)
Why: The second annual live and silent auction for OpenDoors, a not-for-profit dedicated to helping at-risk youth, will feature original art, food, wine, beer and live “explosive hot jazz” performed by Firecracker Jazz Band.
Over 40 artists contributed to the auction, which includes a painting and two ink-on-recycled paper pieces by outsider/folk artists Gabriel Shaffer; a colored-pencil sketch by Taiyo LaPaix; a cast-resin sculpture by Stacy Deslatte; a hand-dyed silk and cotton shawl by Barbara Zaretsky; a semi-precious stones and silver necklace by Joanna Gollberg; a bright painting by Moni Hill; and oh, so much more.
An array of sweet and savory delights, beer and wine will be provided by Chorizo, Mela, Limones, Old Europe, Laughing Seed Café, Santé Wine Bar, Table, Early Girl Eatery and the French Broad Chocolate Lounge, among other area restaurants.
All proceeds from the benefit auction supports OpenDoors, an organization dedicated to breaking "the cycle of poverty by connecting local children with an active individualized support network and providing them with opportunities for higher level education," as stated on its website. "OpenDoors helps at-risk kids, living below poverty level, with a support network of local families who provide mentoring as well as transportation to sports and extracurricular activities, tutoring, and school events. This network advocates for OpenDoors kids in the their schools and helps them gain access to school resources so they can graduate high school and flourish. These kids not only become part of our families, we become part of theirs and our community gets stronger."
