• Congratulations to Candler's Geoffrey D. Giles, who has won the New Talent Award from the American Jewelry Design Council and the coveted Abelson New Designer of the Year Award -- in the same year! Giles works in 18K gold and makes one-of a-kind pieces with an industrial flair.
• Robert and Arlene Winkler deserve a big thanks for all their effort to bring real sculpture to Asheville. Through many trials, they have stayed their course to bring in meaningful work. We have so little sculpture here that is not mass-produced in commercial foundries that it becomes easy to ignore the entire medium. Watch for a piece on their River Sculpture Festival in the Sept. 20 edition of Xpress.
• The toilets that sat in the windows of the Rogers Plumbing Building on Biltmore Avenue are long gone. They have been replaced by a sophisticated-looking new gallery. Stay tuned.
• The Asheville Area Arts Council's second annual juried show, Weird, Wild and Wonderful, includes works using toilet plungers and pig intestines. Weird runs through Sept. 29.
• Brad Thomas, director and curator of the William H. Van Every Gallery at Davidson College, continues to come up with strong exhibits of contemporary work. This month's featured artists are Tonya J. Clay, Herb Jackson and Russ Warren.
• Local Noah Saterstrom has completed and installed his "Memory [Memory]" piece in Glasgow. The series of 100 images on metal plates was commissioned by the Scottish firm Morris and Spottiswood and was created with WNC printer Bill Clements. Watch for a possible Asheville venue for the serigraphs in early winter.
