• Don't bring your dog. (Again this year, a shaded Detain Your Pet area will be set up for those who forget. But note: Locals will be fined $5).
• Don't imbibe on Sunday (at least not on the streets): No alcohol will be served on Sunday at Bele Chere, nor will any be allowed on the streets that day (though local bars and restaurants will still serve drinks as usual). On Friday and Saturday, you'll need a photo I.D. to purchase a wristband ($1), which is required before you can buy beer at festival beverage booths.
• Do recycle: You'll find green-and-yellow recycling-only containers and yellow trash/recycling containers throughout the festival grounds. Empty aluminum cans, glass bottles and No. 1 and 2 plastic bottles can be recycled. No trash in the recycling bins!
• Don't bring bicycles, roller blades, roller skates or skateboards to Bele Chere. The same goes for bottles and coolers, which are likewise prohibited.
The basics:
• Hours of operation:
Friday, July 23: noon to 11 p.m.
Saturday, July 24: 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Sunday, July 25: noon to 6 p.m.
• Help!
Information booths will be located in Pack Square, at Pritchard Park, and at the intersection of College and Spruce streets. Look for roving "info-tendants," presented by Wachovia. These nice folks will be on street corners and in other high-traffic areas, wearing official Bele Chere shirts.
The Mission St. Joseph's First Aid tents will be available at Pritchard Park and in the Children's Area in City/County Plaza.
• Getting there:
You'll find city parking decks at the Civic Center, and on Rankin Avenue, Wall Street, and in the BB&T Building. Several surface lots will also be open; a special-events parking fee will apply in most cases. Free handicapped parking will be available on Spruce Street, near College Street and in the Rankin Avenue garage.
Shuttle service begins one hour before the festival starts each day, ending one hour after regular festival hours; shuttles run about once every 20 minutes. Cost: $2 roundtrip.
The east shuttle will run from the back parking lot of the Asheville Mall (on Tunnel Road east of downtown). The west shuttle will run from the Kmart Plaza shopping center (on Patton Avenue in West Asheville).
