Over the weekend of July 23-25, the city of Asheville throws its annual Bele Chere festival. It's a massive street party, taking up almost all of downtown, with mega-music, dancing, shopping and munching galore.
To give you a taste, here are five quintessential Bele Chere experiences you won't want to miss out on.
1. Golden Delights
If fried foods are your weakness, you'll be glad to know that the greasy, sugary goodness of fresh-made funnel cakes are a Bele Chere staple. Yeah, there are plenty of other delectable choices -- and even some healthy ones -- but at the end of the day it's all about the funnel cake.
2. Cash & Carry
If shopping is your bag, you'd better bring a big one to Bele Chere. The streets are lined with booths selling everything from hand-made jewelry to one-of-a-kind clothing -- stuff you'll never find at the local mall!
3. Splish-Splash
Looking to cool off? Why not take a raft ride around the city fountain? It's a Bele Chere tradition and a lot of fun for all ages.
4. I Spy Wine
Get your passport stamped for Zinfomania, Ravenswood Wine's brave new world for wine-lovers which lets you tour the wines of the world all in one place. But be warned, you have to be over 21 to be a citizen of this country, natch.
5. Shake It Like a Polaroid Picture
Here's the thing about Bele Chere: One minute you're walking down the street, the next, you're doing the Electric Slide with 200 of your newest best friends. While you're here, check out the headliners -- but keep your ears open for new sounds, as well. Because whether you prefer the two-step or the twist, you'll find plenty of places to shake it at Bele Chere.
