Drinks

My oh my, but this area does love a good drink. This year saw some tight competition in the category of WNC's favorite watering holes, beers, cocktails, wines and the people that serve them.

Best bar in town? Perennial favorites Usual Suspects and Jack of the Wood maintained their perch, tying for first place. They were joined by another returning winner, Westville Pub. But those aren't the only places with ferociously loyal patrons. Flying Frog tied for second place, with Broadway's, Scully's and New French Bar all coming in third.

The quality and selection of Asheville's beers is often noted, and Barley's Taproom and the Bier Garden both kept their first and second spots respectively. Meanwhile, Hall of Famer Highland Brewing is still the champ of local brewers.

And the bartenders? Their skill makes any night on the town, and Usual Suspects' Cathy and Jack of the Wood's Joe helped boost their establishments to the top. They were joined on the list by Joli Rouge's fresh-fruit slinging, concoction-inventing Raith. (But if you want to see him, hurry, because he tells Xpress he's leaving soon.)

For those who like a good glass of grape, newcomer Santé won top honors.

Quietest place to drink? At home.

This whole survey sucked.  It was for all of Western North Carolina?  All I saw was a self congratulatory list of places to get drunk in Asheville.  Way to go guys…

I must say that in all my travels across 21 countries in this world, I’m saddened to say that the Beir Garden offers the worst service I’ve ever had.  The staff members were rude and created an unwelcome atmosphere.  Sorry Bier Garden, but I don’t think you’ll be winning any awards from anyone until you’ve had a staff overhaul.
