Media

Xpress readers' top media picks reveal a thing or two about the information junkies who flock to our purple newspaper boxes every Wednesday for a weekly fix.

So loyal are they to their local favorites that perusing this year's winners sometimes induces a sense of déjà vu: For instance, Martin Anderson, Kim Clark and Ken and Tammy scored as the top radio DJs -- same as last year. Ditto for the most adored radio stations: WNCW 88.7 took first place, WCQS 88.1 second and WPVM 103.5 third, just like in 2006.

This loyalty is occasionally strong enough to outlast even the very existence of a news source: Though the Asheville Global Report has ceased publication in print (while still publishing online and producing a weekly TV show), its imprint remains in the hearts of many of our readers, as it claimed second in the category of best free newspaper other than Xpress. The AGR was edged out of first place this time around by the newly emerged Take 5.

Other traits revealed about our readers by their top choices: They've got a penchant for the bizarre, electing "News of the Weird" as one of the favorite Xpress features, and an aversion to fashion, picking "Top Drawer" as one of the least favorites. And they're equally delighted and disgusted by "The Asheville Disclaimer," which nabbed No. 1 slots for both most- and least-favorite feature.

Thanks to those who voted me “Best Arts Writer” and who landed the movie reviews second place as best thing in the paper. Now, about those votes that snagged us third place for worst thing in the paper…

an idea, for what it’s worth - it would cool if you guys developed a widget, a little button, that would incorporate your Best Of logo for us computer geeks to put on our web sites. it would be great for businesses and their web sites, too. just an idea, which might increase your traffic and links back to your site.

But, Mtn X, you got our web address wrong.  That old one will still get you to our old site, from which you can click over to the new digs:
