Congratulations to the Asheville Humane Society, the number-one vote getter in our newest Pets' category: Animal Shelter/Rescue Center. AHS performs shelter duty and provides a pet-adoption center for Asheville and Buncombe County. Working with some 8,000 stray or abandoned animals a year, the nonprofit has a new Animal Adoption and Education Center under construction off Brevard Road to centralize and expand its service capacity (see www.ashevillehumane.org). Animal Compassion Network placed second, with Brother Wolf earning third place. Hats off to the staff and many community volunteers supporting these vital services.
Absent as a category since 2005, Pet Groomer is back this year, highlighting two old favorites: Canine Sheer Heaven and The Soapy Dog. The Pet Vet on Patton placed third for grooming in its first showing, and won a double-header of sorts by placing third in the Veterinarian category as well.
