Is anyone shocked that Sunny Point Café won Best Breakfast in WNC? Again? Getting into the popular breakfast eatery on weekend mornings can be reminiscent of trying to bust into some velvet-roped Manhattan club after midnight. Or maybe that's just the hypoglycemia talking.

Sunny Point is good. Good enough to pack a snack to keep the hunger pangs away while waiting for a table. Maybe it's the angel biscuits or the multigrain waffles. It could be the produce that's so local it's practically knocking on the kitchen door to come in. Maybe it's the huevos rancheros, which kitchen manager Lisa Payne names as her favorite dish.

Those huevos are indeed something else — black-bean cakes served with local chorizo, feta cheese, roasted-tomatillo salsa and herb-tossed redskin spuds, topped with two free-range eggs any style, cilantro crema and crispy tortilla strips. All this adds up to a dish good enough to have found its way into the running for Good Morning America's best breakfast in the U.S.

"I think that our food is just awesome, and it's fresh,” says Payne. "I think the garden gives us a lot of exposure — being located in a neighborhood has has helped us tremendously."
