Budget cuts may end program that trains inmates to fight forest fires
BlueRidgeNow reports: Henderson County fire chiefs are trying to save a program that trains inmates to support firefighters at wildfires. The program, run by the North Carolina Forest Service, is in danger of being cut because of state budget reductions....

The Forest Service and the N.C. Division of Prisons use a program called BRIDGE (Building Rehabilitating Instructing Developing Growing and Employing) in which inmates ages 18 to 25 help fight fires. Once the inmates receive certifications, they are part of a team that can be dispatched to help fight wildfires and relieve local fire departments.

The program is set for elimination in July 2010....

The BRIDGE program is based at Western Youth Institution in Morganton...
