Fourth candidate announces run for McDowell County sheriff
From the McDowell News:
Another Republican plans to run for sheriff of McDowell County.
Mark Stewart, 44, said he plans to run as a Republican candidate for sheriff in 2010. C. Rick Smith, a veteran law enforcement officer who's served with both the Marion Police Department and the county Sheriff's Office, previously announced he would run as a Republican for the job. The current sheriff, Dudley Greene, said he will also run next year. He too is a Republican.
So far, only one Democrat, Mike Thompson, was announced to the local media that he is running for sheriff.
Stewart said he has no law enforcement experience but he wants to make a difference in his native county. He lives in Pleasant Gardens and owns Stewart Radiator and Mechanical.
"I've decided to run because I believe there are things in this county that need to be changed," he said in a prepared statement. "People in the county need more than protection. They need to know that there are two parts to the job. The second part being to 'serve' the citizens. It seems to me like the serve part has been overlooked for way too long.
