An NC DOT Division 14 engineer is giving an update on I-40 rockslide. 200,000 tons of rock fell. Two lanes are cleared for work trucks, but highway can’t be reopened because of unstable rock. The stretch of I-40 with the rock slide ordinarily sees 22,000 cars a day with 45 percent being tractor trailers. The estimated cost to North Carolina of closing the highway is $1.1 million per day. A critical blast on I-40 rock slide will take place tomorrow; it will tell more about geology makes up of slide, says the NCDOT engineer.
