Via Norman Blair, Shut In Ridge Race Director
Posted by Jonathan Poston
Because of inclement winter weather concerns, right up until start time this morning, Race Director, Norman Blair, didn’t know whether or not runners would be permitted to finish this year’s 31st Annual Shut In Ridge Race at the base of Mt. Pisgah as planned. Then at the very last minute, parkway officials confirmed that all was clear to proceed as scheduled.
Just over 200 trail runners once again tamed this beast of a 17.8 mile, mostly uphill race, which started at the NC Arboretum, went along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, and finished at the Mt. Pisgah parking area.
Runners kicked through thick blankets of fallen leaves concealing holes, rocks, and stumps, scrambled up and down seemingly vertical grades, and endured a lung shivering dank cold for 17.8 miles.
With no major accidents reported, Shut In finishers once again proved themselves superior to the rugged back country terrain that is infamous for besting lesser men and women.
