Prominent Backer Calls Social Security a “Ponzi Scheme”
RALEIGH, NC – Evidence continues to mount that Western North Carolina seniors cannot trust Jeff Miller to protect Social Security, as one of his most prominent supporters has recently called Social Security a “Ponzi Scheme.”
Dick Armey, the former Republican Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives and chairman of Freedom Works, recently told bloggers at the Right Nation 2010 convention that Social Security was a “Ponzi Scheme” and that the program takes money from citizens under “false pretenses.”
Freedom Works has endorsed Miller, and Miller features their endorsement on his website.
“One of Miller’s biggest name backers is calling Social Security a Ponzi scheme. I call it one of the most successful programs in the history of the United States that has kept millions of seniors out of poverty,” said Andrew Whalen, Executive Director of the North Carolina Democratic Party. “So Jeff, Western North Carolina seniors want to know: do you think Social Security is just a Ponzi scheme too?”
Social Security has become a major issue in the campaign for the 11th Congressional District recently due to Miller’s denials of his own statements in support of privatizing Social Security and raising the retirement age. Miller recently held a news conference to complain that an ad by Heath Shuler’s campaign committee that pointed out Miller’s clear support of Social Security privatization and raising the retirement age.
“Jeff Miller is on the record supporting a raise in the retirement age and privatizing Social Security, yet he has been crying like a little kid who’s fallen off his bike and skinned his knee whenever anyone talks about it,” said Andrew Whalen, Executive Director of the North Carolina Democratic Party. “He hates talking about Social Security for one simple reason -- seniors can’t trust him to protect it.”
