Local bands Vertigo Jazz Project and The Asheville Jazz Allstars team up with Geniass Productions and Mo Daddy’s Bar to present the Soul Jazz Jam, a free night of music at Mo Daddy’s every Wednesday.
In an email, a Geniass Productions representative writes, “This month at Mo Daddy’s Bar’s soul jazz jam is shaping up to be legendary. With two Grammy winners on the books (9/22 Kofi Burbridge, 9/29 Count M’butu) and our very own regional drum god Jeff Sipe (9/8) coming out, the Soul Jazz Jam has officially taken its place in Asheville as the premier weekly event in town.
“Jeff Sipe: This will be Jeff Sipe’s second time at the jam. He is a founding member of the self-applied Cajun Slamgrass Band Leftover Salmon, Aquarium Rescue Unit, and played in the Zambiland Orchestra, an experimental big band featuring members of Phish, Widespread Panic and others. Most recently he has toured with Keller Williams with Moseley, Droll and Sipe , Jeff Coffin Mu’tet, and Jimmy Herring Band. He has been said to ‘live for music’ by Herring, who says though he and Sipe have now known each other for years, Jeff Sipe remains his first choice of any drummer around with whom to play.
“Kofi Burbridge’s BDAY XTRAVAGANZA: (Grammy Winner) It’s Kofi’s Birthday!!! This is Kofi’s 3rd time at the Soul Jazz Jam! Kofi Burbridge has provided the Derek Trucks Band with his essential talents on the flute and keyboards for over 10 years now and can be currently seen and heard touring with Jeff Coffin’s Mutet, The Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi Soul Stew Review, and Yonrico Scott Band. Kofi is also known as one of the best improvisers on the circuit and will surely add a touch of soul to what is already a wonderful night at Mo Daddy’s.
“Count M’butu: (Grammy Winner) He has had a storied career since the 1980’s. Recently, Count M’Butu has been the mysterious sixth member of The Derek Trucks Band for the last six or more years and has shared the stage with such artists as The Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler, Phish, Stone Temple Pilots and Edwin McCain, among many others. Currently the Count is enjoying a little break living in Atlanta, GA and continues to teach his unique style of hand drumming. He’s also busy with a number of different projects including the bluegrass-fusion inspired M’Butu’s Zoo Krewe and his collaboration with Kalimba virtuoso Kevin Spears.”
