NCGOP slams Dems’ alternative redistricting maps

Here’s the press release from the North Carolina Republican Party:
For Immediate Release
RALEIGH, NC –  In an all-too-familiar scenario, Democrats in the General Assembly released their alternative redistricting maps hours before the House is to begin deliberation on new districts and with no input from the public.

“No one should be surprised,” said Robin Hayes, Chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party.  “Democrats have always drawn maps in secret, with little or no regard to the public’s opinion, and have always waited until the last minute to release their plans. We can’t expect them to behave differently now simply because they’re in the minority.”

The Democrat maps, submitted in legislative bill form this morning, are now being seen by the public for the first time. Republicans, however, have held more than 40 public hearings and have gone through at least two public versions of maps, after reacting to public opinion. The full House is set to debate the maps beginning on Monday.

Democrats have also been criticized for drawing maps in secret, holding very few public hearings, and submitting maps just hours before members are to vote on their approval.
“This is par for the course for Democrats,” Hayes said.  “Thankfully, we haven’t made the same mistakes. The process from the Republicans in the General Assembly has been open and honest, and today’s political stunt by a desperate party won’t detract from that process.”
