A team of six A-B Tech Surgical Technology students won the state championship during a scrub bowl competition Nov. 3 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
Sponsored by the N.C. State Assembly of the Association of Surgical Technologists, this was the first year for the competition where students answer questions relevant to surgical technology based on certification exam-like questions.
The students competing from A-B Tech were Daniel Banks, Stephanie Cessna, Kathleen Kirsher, Dana Lycans, Jennifer Northrup and Brooke Wines.
“These students have only been in the Surgical Technology program for 10 weeks. It is a tremendous accomplishment,” said Daniel Stokoe, Clinical Coordinator/Surgical Technology Instructor at A-B Tech. “The students competed against 15 other teams, some of which had up to 20 students. We were one of the smallest teams, up against teams twice and three times our size.”
The team will also compete in July at a similar event held closer to program completion sponsored by the N.C. Alliance of Surgical Technology Educators.
