ASHEVILLE - The Junior Police Academy teaches teenagers about the philosophy, policies, and guiding principals of law enforcement and the ethical conduct governing police services in the community. It gives teenagers an appreciation for the problems and challenges facing law enforcement. The Junior Police Academy would be excellent for students who are wishing to prepare for their Senior Projects.

This mini-course consists of one week of classes held at the Police Department during the week of August 6-10, 2012. The final day of the class ends with a graduation ceremony. This course will consist of basic classroom instruction, presentations, and demonstrations on topics such as criminal investigation, constitutional and criminal law, use of force, departmental structure, and defensive tactics. Each day begins at 9:00 am and ends at approximately 5:00 pm. Lunch is included. Applications can be obtained from Officer Allen Dunlap at adunlap@ashevillenc.gov or by phone at 259-5834. The Junior Police Academy is designed to:

· prevent public misunderstanding about police functions.

· build a stronger relationship between the community and the police department.

· provide teenagers with positive role models.

· increase community support and awareness about police operations through education and exchanging of ideas.

· create responsible, well-informed teenagers who influence public opinion on police practices and services.

Modeled after similar programs developed in England and in the United States, Asheville’s Junior Police Academy is just one of its forms of community policing.
