The Asheville Kennel Club has made a donation of $5000 for canine relief in the wake of hurricane "Sandy" which impacted the heavily populated coastlines of New Jersey and New York. This relief donation is in keeping with similar actions taken by the Asheville Kennel Club following hurricane Katrina in 2005 which devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.
The "Sandy" Canine Relief funds have been divided between two organizations within the affected area. They are the Staten Island Animal Care Center (http://www.nycacc.org/Locations.htm ) and SEERS Farm in Jackson, N.J. (http://seerfarms.org/).
In the immediate aftermath of the storm these sanctuaries took in animals as people evacuated to human shelters, hotels and FEMA housing where pets were not welcome. Many animals have already been returned to grateful owners, but many others have not and they remain safe in long term care at the shelters. These two shelters, as well as others in the area, are in need of money for food, utilities and transportation to support the large numbers of animals involved. Individual donations are encouraged.
The Asheville Kennel Club is a non-profit, volunteer driven organization that has been serving the purebred dog community of Western North Carolina for over 70 years, since 1934 when it was licensed by the American Kennel Club.
The Asheville Kennel Club holds a major all-breed dog show annually in June at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center in Fletcher. Profits from the dog show are used to fund canine related causes including disaster relief, a veterinary scholarship at UNC and funding of local spay-neuter efforts.
