Citizens capture downtown purse theft suspect
Release from the Asheville Police Department

On Monday, 05-21-12, at approx. 10:04 pm, Officers with the Asheville Police Department received a call in reference to a fight in progress near the intersection of Patton Ave. and Coxe Ave. Upon arrival officers observed two subjects physically detaining our suspect, 26 year old Christopher Richard Word, and quickly took him into custody.

According to our victim in this matter, she was withdrawing money from the ATM when Mr. Word came up from behind and grabbed her change purse from the shelf she had set it on and then fled westbound on Patton Ave. Hearing our victims scream for help, the witnesses in this matter chased after Mr. Word and detained him until officer arrival, recovering both the change purse and the cash involved in the process.

Mr. Word was subsequently arrested and charged with Felony Larceny from Person. He is currently being held on a $10,000 dollar secure bond.
