Cold Springs shelter closed for repairs
Here's the press release from the USDA Forest Service:

FRANKLIN, N.C., Sept. 14, 2012 -- The USDA Forest Service today announced that Cold Springs Shelter on the Appalachian Trail (AT) has been closed for repairs. The Forest Service estimates that the shelter will be reopened after December 15.

The Nantahala Hiking Club will conduct the work to repair the bottom seal and footers to add stability to the shelter. Hikers can still access the shelter's toilet and drinkable water while the work is conducted. The Forest Service encourages hikers to use other camping options close to Cold Springs Shelter until the work is completed.

Cold Springs Shelter, located 1.3 miles north of Burningtown Gap, serves as a rest area for hikers of the AT. The shelter was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the 1930s using chestnut tree logs. Cold Springs Shelter is a listed national historic site.
