Girl Scouts Peaks to Piedmont drive gets 5,107 bags for Goodwill

(Colfax, NC – December 10, 2012) –Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont, in partnership with Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina, Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina and Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont have just wrapped up the annual partnership Good Turn for Goodwill community service project. This event took place throughout the month of October at local Goodwill retail stores and all Goodwill donation centers.

More than 228 troops consisting of 1,903 Girl Scouts from central and western North Carolina donated 5,107 bags of goods to Goodwill.

Local Girl Scouts collected gently used clothing, toys, books and household goods to benefit Goodwill. The goal was to help those who are unemployed and underemployed find jobs and get back on their feet. The service project taught Girl Scouts life lessons and addressed the needs in their community.

“The Good Turn drive provides critical support for Goodwill’s mission,” said Jaymie Eichorn, VP Marketing & Communications for Goodwill Industries of Northwest NC. “The generous donations of clothing and household items from the Girl Scouts will be sold in our stores to fund programs that help people find jobs and get back on their feet.”

Marcia Cole, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont, said the collaboration is full-circle with girl’s gaining leadership experiencing while helping to address the needs of the communities.

“Learning to be a good citizen through service to others is one of the core values of Girl Scouting, and this is a great opportunity for our girls to join together for their community and to help their neighbors in need,” Cole said. “Good Turn for Goodwill is a unique, collaborative effort and one of our area’s signature community service projects. Our Girl Scouts and everyone involved really enjoy it.”
