Developing A Sustainable Economy: As if Community Matters

What are some of the strategies for developing a sustainable economy that works for our region? How can individuals and our community participate in this transition? Ned Ryan Doyle, current Green Living Seminars Coordinator for the upcoming "Southern Green Living Expo", former director of the 10 year "Southern Energy & Environment Expo" and host of "Our Southern Community" radio program will present an energetic overview of the successes of "GREEN" developments in the past decade and the future opportunities available in our regional community at Green Drinks on June 27th!

For better or worse today, the common thread connecting 'green' issues is economics. We can't really put a price on clean water, fresh air and a healthy forest, however our economic policies today will have a direct impact on their future. Developing a sustainable economy for our regional community is vital to any long term success in conserving and protecting our natural resources and quality of life. Often the question is asked: What is 'green'? One answer is that it means "Growing Regional Economic Enterprises Now" in a context of sustainability.

Beyond the numbers of the GDP, stock market and conventional ROI's, comes the question of just how sustainable are current economic policies? The assumption of unlimited economic growth, for example, conflicts with the basic fact of nature that there are limits to everything. In biology, unlimited cell growth is the definition of cancer... until the limit when the host dies. Economic policy is not insulated or separate from the natural world, but an integral part of how we cope with environmental challenges, energy policies and sustainable communities.
