The U.S. Small Business Administration North Carolina District Office and AARP are hosting a special event Tuesday, Oct. 2, in Candler, N.C., to celebrate the first National Encore Entrepreneur Mentor Day. A panel discussion will highlight successful business owners that started their companies when they were over 50. Also, SCORE counselors will be on hand to provide business advice.

National Encore Entrepreneur Mentor Day is part of a larger effort by SBA and AARP to promote entrepreneurship among in that age group throughout the United States. Here in North Carolina, AARP will also discuss their new program Work Reimagined. This program is the first talent exchange dedicated to helping companies find experienced workers and to helping experienced professionals connect to more satisfying careers.

With one in four individuals ages 44 to 70 interested in becoming entrepreneurs, and 63 percent of Americans planning to work during retirement, small business ownership is a good option. Small business owners with long-term counselors see bigger sales, hire more workers and last longer. SBA and AARP will provide the training and mentoring services older entrepreneurs need to successfully start and grow businesses and create jobs.
