Full announcement from the city of Asheville:

On December 12, 2012 at approximately 4:40 PM, the Asheville Police Department responded to a traffic crash with injuries at City of Asheville Public Works located at 171 S. Charlotte Street. Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2007 Ford Fusion operated by 37 year old David Nathan Jones of Mars Hill, was traveling eastbound on Hilliard Avenue and initially involved in a traffic crash near Grove Street.

The Ford Fusion continued at a high rate of speed through the intersection of Hilliard Avenue & Biltmore Avenue onto South Market Street where the vehicle became airborne over an embankment. The vehicle landed in the rear parking lot of City of Asheville Public Works.

The vehicle struck two parked vehicles and two Public Works employees (Ernie Lee Huffman, 56 and Bobby Kenneth Edwards, 41). Mr. Huffman was treated and released for minor injuries at City of Asheville Health Services. Mr. Edwards was transported to Mission Hospital with critical injuries and is being treated at this time.

Jones and his 3 year old daughter in the Ford Fusion were also transported to Mission Hospital with critical injuries. The child has succumbed to her injuries and passed away this morning. Jones is being treated at Mission Hospital at this time. Charges are pending against Jones.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
