RiverLink hosts a free live theater performance

ASHEVILLE, NC -- RiverLink will host a free performance of the "Swannanoa River Play," a play performed by the Warren Wilson College Theatre Department on Sunday, April 8 at 2 p.m. at the RiverLink Sculpture and Performance Plaza. The public is invited to bring a picnic blanket, food and drink and enjoy an afternoon of a live theatre performance of local history and local color.

The 30-minute performance uses the words of Swannanoa Valley residents as they told their stories to Wilson students in interviews last fall. The play, which will include music as well as acting, will bring the river stories back to the people who shared them as well as their friends and neighbors.

Last fall, Warren Wilson Theatre Department chair Graham Paul, faculty member Jerry Pope and many others embarked upon the Swannanoa River Project, a community-engaged, service-learning coalition of Warren Wilson faculty, Swannanoa Valley community groups and individuals, and the College's Service Program Office. During the fall, the Project involved upwards of 90 Wilson students.

RiverLink's Sculpture and Performance Plaza is located at 117 Riverside Drive. It formerly was the site of three run-down blue buildings. RiverLink bought the 3-acre property in 2008 and had the buildings torn down in 2010 to offer riverfront space for events and to make Asheville's River District more attractive.

For more information about this family-friendly, free event, contact RiverLink's Dave Russell at 828-252-8474, ext. 11 or dave@riverlink.org.
