“Shop Class as Soulcraft” author to speak Sept. 13 at WWC

Matthew Crawford, author of “Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work,” will give a free public presentation Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Warren Wilson College Chapel. Crawford is a research fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia.

The event is being presented by the Center for Craft, Creativity & Design in partnership with Warren Wilson College, which emphasizes the value of work through its student work program. More information on the Sept. 13 presentation is available at 828-890-2050 and info@craftcreativitydesign.org.

Crawford’s New York Times bestseller brings alive an experience that was once quite common, but now seems to be receding from society: making and fixing things. Based on his own background as an electrician and mechanic, Crawford makes a case for the Intrinsic satisfactions and cognitive challenges of manual work – satisfactions and challenges that many Warren Wilson students experience daily on their campus work crews.
