Join us for this trip-of-a-lifetime up the historic Mt. Mitchell Toll Road to the ruins of Camp Alice.

The motor road has been closed to vehicles since the no-fee Blue Ridge Parkway was constructed in the 1940s. Every year, however, residents and visitors have a chance to travel back in time and drive the old road on a special tour organized by the Museum.

The road has set mostly undisturbed since it closed and still twists and turns through the undeveloped mountain landscape. With abundant views of the surrounding valleys and mountains this road is a photographer’s paradise. The vehicles will make several stops along the way for photo opportunities, snacks and drinks, and historical interpretation. The museum will also provide lunch at the former site of Camp Alice.

The trip will meet at 7:30 am in parking lot of Black Mountain Savings Bank, 200 E. State Street and should return to Black Mountain before dusk.

Drivers with high-clearance 4-wheel drive vehicles who will carry 3 passengers will be able to attend at no cost. Please call for details. Cost is $75 for Museum members; $100 for non-members.
