Saturday October 13th from 10am to 5pm in the Sears Asheville Mall front parking lot, volunteers will be ready to accept up to 10 tires, on or off rim, at no charge from residents of Buncombe County. Please bring along a valid ID or your most recent water bill showing that you're a Buncombe County resident. This free event is geared for the general public and not area businesses. The first 50 cars to drop off tires will receive 1 free 8X10 blue tarp courtesy of NCDOT's Swat-A-Litterbug program. Since January 2012, Asheville GreenWorks Volunteers have pulled 1,277 tires from our rivers, stream and dump-sites throughout Buncombe County, already surpassing the 1,123 recovered in 2011. Illegal tire dumping is on the rise and to help address this environmental problem, we pulled together a public (free) tire collection and recycling program. On September 29th during the biggest river clean-up of the year, we pulled 48 tires in a small section of the French Broad River, highlighting the pervasive nature of this issue. John Miko, President of Land o' Sky Chapter of Trout Unlimited said “ Our rivers and streams are the lifeblood of our region, our environment and our lifestyle here in Western North Carolina. Illegal dumping and careless trash disposal threaten their health, our health and our outdoor heritage. Please treat them with respect, get involved and ensure that future generations will know the joy and beauty of clean, wild, running waters.”
