Two pedestrians killed in separate incidents Sat. evening—UPDATED

The Asheville Police Department Traffic Safety Unit is currently investigating two separate traffic fatalities. Both accidents involve a vehicle striking a pedestrian in the roadway.

The first accident was reported at 6:08 pm at 314 Airport Road. The second accident was reported at 6:17 pm at 1073 Patton Avenue.

More information will be released as the investigation continues and after family members are notified.

At 1808 hrs, a fatal collision involving a pedestrian occurred near 314 Airport Rd. Pedestrian was identified as Mark Anthony Haynie W/M DOB: 05/29/1971. Haynie was crossing Airport Rd in an area that was not at an intersection or in a crosswalk area. Haynie was struck by a vehicle traveling east on Airport Rd. The vehicle was a 2006 Toyota Tacoma.

At 1817 hrs, a fatal collision involving a pedestrian occurred near 1073 Patton Ave. Pedestrian was identified as Konstantinos Katsigiannis W/M DOB: 05/14/1933. Katsigiannis was crossing Patton Ave in an area that was not at an intersection or in a crosswalk area. Katsigiannis was struck by a vehicle traveling west on Patton Ave. The vehicle was a 2002 Honda.

The Buncombe County Districts Attorney’s Office has been informed about these investigations. Both pedestrians crossed in an area not designated for pedestrian traffic, along with other evidence discovered in the investigation, it has been determined neither driver committed a violation. There will be no charges in either case.
