Video: Asheville’s David Sieg on video preservation at TEDxKatuah
"Dave Sieg gets nostalgic about old technology he's afraid will become extinct given our rate of technological change. In this presentation he talks about how far technology has advanced in his lifetime, and uses the ancient analog animation computer he has kept running as an example of old technology thats worth preserving. For almost a decade if you saw computer animation on television it was probably produced on one of the eight Scanimate computers that were built. Sieg has the only remaining machine and has kept it working in his Asheville, NC studio. In the process of searching for old videotape material produced on Scanimate, he became acutely aware of the problems facing archivists in the preservation, transfer, and storage of our many pre-Internet obsolete media formats."
