Looking for ways to help improve and protect local waterways? Become an environmental steward of a stream near you!
ECO, the Environmental & Conservation Organization, is seeking volunteers to expand its Adopt-A-Stream program. ECO will be hosting a hands-on orientation and Adopt-A-Stream Workshop on Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 10am until 2pm at the ECO office at 121 Third Avenue West in Hendersonville. This is a great chance to learn about an established community-based monitoring program dedicated to the protection and improvement of water quality. Participants will receive both classroom and field experience for identifying stream health and water quality issues. After the training, you’ll be qualified to join an existing Adopt-A-Stream team or start your own to become an environmental steward. No prior experience is necessary. The classroom session will be held in the ECO conference room from 10:00-12:00 and will include discussion of the program handbook, watershed health, and identification of pollution issues. From 1:00-2:00, attendees will be able to conduct a practice Adopt-A-Stream survey at a local stream under the guidance of the instructors and team leaders.
Participants are encouraged to bring a snack, a water bottle, and appropriate outdoor clothing. We will not be getting into the stream, so boots or waders are not necessary. While we will not be traveling far, car pooling is encouraged to avoid parking problems at the site. Donations are gladly accepted to help cover costs of printed materials. Registration is required. Please call 828-692-0385 to sign-up or visit http://www.eco-wnc.org for more information.
