Artist Dustin Spagnola to speak at Western Carolina University
Details from the college:

Guest artist Dustin Spagnola will speak about his art and public works during a visit to Western Carolina University on Tuesday, March 19.

The event, free and open to the public, will begin at 5 p.m. in Room 130 of the John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center. Topics will range from Spagnola’s personal aesthetic to the communities in which he creates public murals and how the two intersect.

Spagnola received his art degree from Warren Wilson College in 2004. His work has transitioned from re-creating deteriorating buildings and walls to portraits of important figures in African-American history, such as Malcolm X, Barack Obama, Martin Luther King Jr., Sojourner Truth and John Coltrane. He is part of “Kolor Kathmandu,” a project to create 75 site-specific public murals in Nepal. His work has shown at Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens, Ormond Beach, Fla.; Art Whino gallery, Washington D.C.; ABC No Rio, New York City; Push, Asheville; Gen Art, West Hollywood, Calif.; and Art Basel, Miami Beach.

Spagnola’s visit to Western Carolina University is supported by the School of Art and Design.
