The Supreme Court ruled on the matter of guns and the 2nd Amendment in 2009. They did rule that the Amendment does bestow the right to self-defense. No amount of bone-headed scare-mongering can change the fact that there is no phantom despot President itching to take guns away. Under the current administration, the only things different are more gun and ammo sales and making it easier to carry guns in national parks. In the Supreme Court ruling, contrary to the unfounded interpretation here and among other, similar groups, it did NOT include such things as ‘assault rifles’, large-capacity magazines and so forth. In fact, the Court did leave it quite open that such limitations do not violate the 2nd Amendment. So while the gun manufacturers get richer with every murder, the delusional continue to have their strings pulled with the myth of heavy-handed government thugs “coming to take my guns.” It’s not really about hunting, target shooting, or domestic defense (from burglars, etc.), but rather about fear-mongering and profits.

A biologist studying American gun owners might conclude that 3 species of gun owner exist: 1)regular reasonable guns owners 2)criminals who purchase then illegally and 3) the NRA who worship guns as some sort of deity. “They” (the government?) will take your guns away and then the rest of your Constitutional rights eh? Where was the NRA when The Patriot Act was passed under George W.? It effectively erodes the 4th Amendment such that police can perform warrant-less searches of your home, property, communications on American soil. It also paved the way for the gradual loss of our 1st Amendment rights (“free speech zones” at protests, denial of Occupy Wall St. protesters to peaceably assemble). Why no outrage over that- oh yeah, the far right was ok with that and gladly supported it. Let’s get back to “They” again, your own government. You know, the ones you voted for in past elections up until this moment. Voltaire’s quote “people get the government they deserve” aside, consider a famous 20th century photograph. I It was taken during Italy’s invasion of Ethiopia in 1936 and shows a stone age tribesman about to huck a spear into the sky to down an enemy fighter plane. The fighter plane represents the most well funded, highly trained and technologically superior fighting force on the planet, aka the US military. They are all of these things because Americans vote against budget cuts for them even after it bankrupts ours and future generations. The Stone Age Ethiopian tribesman is the NRA, vainly attempting to stop any imaginary takeover by a big bad government. Who says this takeover will even need human soldiers? As drone flights are now legal over the US (Thanks, Patriots), one can off pesky little gun owners from a secure complex in Langley or Bluff Mt. with the ease of playing a video game. Silly examples yes, but meaningful too. Consider if Big Tobacco used “Cigarettes don’t kill, people do” or drug legalization advocates used “Drugs don’t kill people, people do” as a motto. At the end of the day, the NRA walks hand in hand with the gun industry helping to post record profits by fear mongering. All’s well in America. P.S. Anybody know where I can purchase a conceal/carry permit for my pre-school aged son? He’s been bugging me about freedom and being able to carry his gun to school lately and I don’t want to seem soft on crime to him. After all, a child needs to look up to his father as a role model.

What’s the point of limiting it to guns? Why not also a “Mustard Gas Appreciation Day”, or an “Electric Chair Appreciation Day”? Same effects. |

The NRA is less concerned about what their membership cares about (see Gallup poll on members’ views on assault rifles, clips, etc. and compare to their psycopathic leadership). They are a front group for the gun manufacturers, who provide most of their funding. Ever the hypocrites, they in fact have supported gun control in years past, including the National Firearms Act of 1934 and the Gun Control Act of 1968. In fact, they publicly stated “the NRA has been in support of workable, enforceable gun control legislation since its very inception in 1871.” As far as school kids wanting to pack, check this out: “Conservative host Glenn Beck and “historian” David Barton on Tuesday debuted a new show called “Foundations of Freedom” and suggested that history proved that school shootings could be prevented if all elementary school children were armed.” |

Actually, in this fantasy scenario (government coming to take your guns), it would not, of course, be President Obama knocking at the door; it would be heavily armed, well supported and highly trained law enforcement you would meet. And far from saying “ahhhHA…..checkmate” it would more likely be “whaaaa, I want my mommy.” |
