Erwin High School to host JROTC drill competition

9 SCHOOLS IN JROTC DRILL COMPETITION MARCH 16 AT ERWIN HS

On Saturday, March 16, C.A. Erwin High School will host a 4-hour drill competition consisting of JROTC groups from 9 area high schools, beginning at 8:30am.

The annual Chief Warrant Officer Three Mitch Carver Memorial Drill meet will be held on Saturday, March 16 at Erwin High School, beginning with an opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Participating schools include all Buncombe County high schools' JROTC programs, along with JROTC units from Asheville HS, East Henderson, Pisgah, and Tuscola.

BACKGROUND:
The competition honors 1992 Erwin HS graduate Mitch Carver, who was a member of the Erwin football team, track team, and himself a JROTC cadet.

Chief Warrant Officer 3 Carver became an army aviator after graduation, and was killed in action on January 13, 2006 while piloting his Kiowa Warrior helicopter for the 10th Mountain Division. Chief Carver was decorated with the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Senior Aviation Badge, the Combat Action Badge, the Air Medal with Valor, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and other honors.
