A former Henderson County charter school teacher who made a sexually explicit video of an 11-year-old girl and emailed it to the school’s principal will spend 18 years in federal prison.
Judge Martin Reidinger also ruled Wednesday that Deborah Lee Tipton will be on lifetime supervised probation and must register as a sex offender when she is released.
Chadwick Hamby, the man Tipton shared the video with, also was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Asheville. The former educator received a little more than four years in prison.
Tipton, 45, was a special-education teacher at The Mountain Community School when she was arrested on child pornography charges in February 2012. Hamby, 42, the school’s principal at the time, was charged with receiving child porn.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Courtney Escaravage said Tipton and Hamby were involved in an extramarital affair for several years before the crime.
