Sawmills and firewood dealers in Haywood County won’t be able to sell walnut to customers in other parts of North Carolina under a state-issued quarantine on the wood.

The N.C. Department of Agriculture quarantine applies to walnut tree material — ranging from firewood to boards and chips. Those materials can’t leave the county.

The quarantine is the first in the state and comes after the thousand cankers disease was discovered in trees in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, part of which is in Haywood County. ...
