With his groups, The Traveling Trees, Splendora Colt and Dead End Armory, he's released some of the most heralded and best-loved music to come out of the state in the past decade. His groups have cast a wide net in the sea of Americana, but are drawn together by the cogency of Hartley’s poignant lyrics delivered in his Texas drawl. His work has drawn comparisons to folk paragons like Will Oldham, Johnny Cash, Jason Molina, John Prine, and Bob Dylan. While the likeness is rooted, Hartley’s songs are replete with idiosyncrasies that defy genre, time, and sometimes logic. He calls it ‘quarter-horse-shoegaze'. You can call it what you will.
Wesley and his bands have toured the country, with stops at SXSW, the 35 Confederate Festival, the Wassaic Project, and Portland’s State Theatre. They’ve shared the stage with acts such as AA Bondy, Brown Bird, Spirit Family Reunion, O’Death, Wooden Wand, Anders Parker, Joe Pug, Ed Askew, Micah Blue Smaldone and Lady Lamb the Beekeeper.
