ASHEVILLE - WNC Health Advocates presents its second annual Michael T. Danforth Community Service Award to Laurey Masterton at a luncheon 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m. July 19 in the fellowship hall of Kenilworth Presbyterian Church, 123 Kenilworth Road, Asheville.
"When we talked about whom we should honor, Laurey's name kept coming up," said Leslie Boyd, president of WNC Health Advocates. "She lives her convictions, nothing defeats her and she exemplifies her motto, 'Don't postpone joy.' "
Masterton is a three-time cancer survivor - uterine cancer in her 20s, ovarian cancer in her 30s, and two years ago, colon cancer.
Each time, her fierce spirit has helped her fight her illness and celebrate her recovery. At age 55, her "magic age," as she phrased it, she bicycled cross-country to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. In May, she organized
the first Joy Ride to benefit Livestrong at the YMCA, a program that helps people deal with life after a cancer diagnosis.
As owner of Laurey's Catering and Gourmet to Go, Masterton is a Living Wage-certified employer offering healthy, scratch-made food. She has given selflessly to the community and works to educate the public about healthy food and about cancer.
The award is named for Michael Danforth, who overcame addiction and spent the final 11 years of his life working to help others achieve and maintain sobriety. He offered people whose families had given up on them gourmet meals on holidays, and never, even as he was dying, lost his sense of the absurd.
Tickets to the luncheon are $22. For more information, call 828-243-6712 or visit http://honoringlaurey.eventbrite.com.
