A Community Conversation on Faith and Sexual Identity
Thursday, June 13, 6:30 to 8:30 pm
At the YWCA, 185 S. French Broad Ave.
From the North Carolina Constitution to the Boy Scouts to the US Supreme Court, questions of faith, marriage and sexual identity have sparked heated debate and protest, in our community and across the nation. Passions run high on every side of these issues, which touch so many core beliefs and values.
And yet we are still neighbors, living in the same community. Can we begin to build a deeper understanding, across the lines that divide us? Is it possible to find compassion, even when we disagree so profoundly? What do our different faith traditions call us to practice, in this tumultuous time?
We invite people of all faiths and political perspectives to join us in this community conversation, not with the intent of undermining any position or changing anyone’s mind, but simply to open an honest dialogue on a controversial topic.
The discussion will be facilitated by Rev. James Lee, Secretary of the Baptist Ministers Union, and Craig White, volunteer for the Campaign for Southern Equality.
Event sponsors include:
Asheville Buncombe Community Relations Council
Baptist Ministers Union of Asheville and Surrounding Counties
Campaign for Southern Equality
Mountain Area Interfaith Forum
Center for Participatory Change
People of Faith for Just Relationships
YWCA of Asheville
