RALEIGH – Staff with the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources have been alerted to a spill of coal ash from a stormwater pipe into the Dan River in Eden and are on-site working with Duke Energy officials to control the spill to protect public health and the environment.
DENR staff in the Winston-Salem Regional Office traveled to the site of the spill today after Duke alerted the agency to the event and worked with Duke Energy officials as the utility worked to bring the spill under control.
DENR staff are taking water samples and continuing to monitor the river’s water quality. While it is early in the investigation and state officials do not yet know of any possible impacts to water quality, staff members have been notifying downstream communities with drinking water intakes.
Staff will continue to work with Duke Energy officials on a remedy for the spill, and will investigate the spill to determine its extent and any impacts to the environment and public health.
DENR will update the public and media with information as it becomes available.
The Environmental Protection Agency has been notified of the spill.
