Riverlink's AmeriCorps members Participate in
Martin Luther King Day Events
Martin Luther King Day is a wonderful opportunity to participate in service projects and work towards positive impacts in our communities and beyond. Martin Luther King Jr. left behind an amazing legacy of service and unwavering commitment in the fight for justice. Riverlink's AmeriCorps Project Conserve members Jess Peete and Lizzy Stokes-Cawley joined Western North Carolina's AmeriCorps to honor MLK Day.
This year in celebration of Martin Luther King Day Americorps Project Conserve partnered with Land-of-Sky Regional Council and Hands-On Buncombe in welcoming close to 260 volunteers of all ages. AmeriCorps members helped facilitate participates working on a variety of cards for veterans, blankets for kids in crisis, as well as other projects that will be distributed to those in need in our community. Jess Peete of RiverLink and AmeriCorps stated, "It was great to see how MLK Day is such an inter-generational event. If we teach younger generations the importance of Dr. King's legacy, it's something that will always be present in their lives. If we instil a sense of service and community in younger people, hopefully they will carry that with them as they become the leaders in their own right."
In the afternoon members of Americorps Project Conserve participated in the Martin Luther King Day March, recognizing MLK's commitment to activism, public speaking and a call to address civil rights. With several speakers, music acts and hundreds of attendees this rally was an impressive community event reminding us of accomplishments as well as the progress that still needs to be made. Lizzy Stokes-Cawley of RiverLink added "Both in Americorps Project Conserve, the impressive organizations we work for (RiverLink) and in the wider community Martin Luther King Day highlights the importance of dedication, activism and service in the crusade to improve the world around us for future generations."
