See you in the funny pages

Wanna see something funny?

A few weeks ago, Mountain Xpress put out a call for new local-cartoon submissions, in the hopes that we could find two new comics to feature every other week. We knew that Western North Carolina is filled with talented artists and jokesters, but were still surprised at the quality and range of the entries that came our way. And while we have selected two new ‘toons to feature regularly, we wanted to let you in on the many and varied rib ticklers that were submitted.

In the pages that follow, you’ll see prime samples from those submissions. We begin with works by our two new cartoonists: Brent Brown and Jonny Cantrell.

Cantrell, whose “true tale of 3 a.m. romance in Asheville” appears below—and check out his Staples-as-Satan bit on page 90—is originally from Tucker, Ga. He moved to Asheville in 2002 after completing a degree in illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Today, he works as a freelance illustrator while doing some fine art on the side. Expect his cartoons in Xpress to tackle tough topics along with the lighter ones. “I look at is a space to say something—not a place to have characters, like a Garfield,” he says. “It won’t always be funny—sometimes it’ll address heavy things like homelessness, war etc.”

Brown, who prepared the “Land of Discovery, Land of Sorrow” strip at right, is a WNC native who lives in Horse Shoe. A graduate of the Art Institute of Atlanta, he’s done illustration, graphic design and cartooning for more than 25 years. His work has graced numerous book covers and even made an appearance in MAD Magazine And judging by what we’ve seen so far, Brown’s cartoons will always be funny.

This issue was completely misleading.  It said it was to be a comical issue…....Ummm…...........not hardly.  there were maybe 3 pages with some incredibly cheesy and not funny comics, but there was no humor anywhere else in the issue.  when you tout the issue as comical, there should be more than just a few pages with bad comics.  You guys keep getting worse and worse.

Did I mention that the comics were not funny?  Because they weren’t.  Not even a little bit.  Nope.  Not even a chuckle.

I’ll bet you guys were desperate for some stuff to fill your issue with, because, forgive me, but the comics were just horrid.  I would keep looking for a good cartoonist if I were you.  Just drawing a funny looking character with a speech bubble does not make it funny.
